Mean Barka

Mean Barka

Vlasta Pospíšilová | Czechoslovakia | 1986 | 16 min

The protagonists of this well-known tale from Fimfárum by Jan Werich are the stingy Barka and other citizens of Dejvice where nothing is given but everything is stolen and envied. Stingy Barka is more a modern story than a classic fairy-tale. Like all of Werich's fairy-tales, this one is also full of humour and wisdom.

Another adaptation of Jan Werich's fairy-tale was made several years after Stingy Barka. The story of When the Leaves Fall from the Oak is an ode to wit and cleverness of an ordinary man who beats the bureaucratically thorough and persistent devil. The story is once again full of kind humour focusing particularly on the character of the devil.

This story from Fimárum is about three sisters who found a ring on their way from the fair and decided that she, who will play the smartest trick on her husband, shall have it. The World of Fireflies

The World of Fireflies

Vlasta Pospíšilová | 63 min

The famous Czech book Fireflies (Broučci) by Jan Karafiát, a classic of Czech literature for children, served as a basis for a marvellous puppet series created by Vlasta Pospíšilová in the 1990’s. The series enchanted children and adults alike. It was created in an international coproduction and the author followed it with second and third series called Adventures on the Meadow (Dobrodružství na louce) and The Firefly Family (Broučkova rodina). Graphic designer Jitka Walterová’s design was inspired by the classic illustrations by Jiří Trnka that are very familiar with children. All this helped to create a magical world full of colourful puppets where the heroes embark on many adventures. Fireflies are one of the essential works of Czech puppet animation and are characterised by smooth and masterly animation.

25 years of Czech animated commercials

25 years of Czech animated commercials

Czechoslovakia, Czech Republic | 60 min

Czech animated commercials underwent significant development after the Velvet Revolution and many studios and artists focusing on commissioned work entered the market. While it is hard to finance authorial films, commissions such as commercials, spots and jingles present certainties for the animators. Luckily for the viewers that are force-fed the commercials, the often renowned and established authors don't hesitate to insert their own graphic style and specific poetics into the commissioned work. Some animators accept commissions once or twice and then move on to something else, but there are authors that create whole series of commercials (Michal Žabka) and jingles (Noro Držiak). Our showcase includes spots by other famous authors and graphic artists – e.g. Jan Balej, Bára Dlouhá, Denisa Grimmová and Jaromír Plachý.

Blu's typical black and white figural paintings come down from the walls and interact with their surroundings. Blu has also filmed his film in Buenos Aires and also in Baden, Switzerland.

The street is full of bricks, furniture and glass. Suddenly everything comes to life and in a whirlwind of dance a skyscraper plan is created. As opposed to the preceding commercial animation, this disturbing video is considered only as an exercise by the authors themselves. Its description mentions a black rook's head that helps the Sun and the Moon to copulate. It's an interpretation of the work by Edward Kelly that also reveals the true nature of the streets of Prague.

The film elaborates the quote by Paul Klee that a line is a dot that went for a walk. The Brazilian director composed his film as an account of the gruelling work of a little man who is to draw such line on the road. The author uses a real road with all its bumpiness and everything that belongs to it.

Midnight Animation | A deeper insight

Midnight Animation | A deeper insight

65 min

This year’s Anifilm once again brings two selections of short films which will certainly find their audience among the rather shockproof and hardened viewers. Films from the Deeper insight showcase are mainly horror films and some of them portray decomposition and entrails. The authors are not afraid of extremes and show the most disgusting things you can imagine. But they often include humour in their films, even though it is a rather absurd and atypical humour as you can see in Herring. Some authors even combine horror with grotesque (Bighorror) and others focus on human organs (Eye in Tuna Care, Cannibalize). The collage film called Two Minutes of Cartoon Violence is a humorous study of violence. On the whole, the selection is a mosaic of bizarreness and obscurity portrayed with various animation techniques.

Midnight animation | Sex and intimacy

The films from our second midnight programme also focus on body, but this time from another point of view - more intimate, sexual and a bit perverted. Some authors focus directly on the reproduction process as you can see in the disturbing films Bottom Feeders and The Flesh. Others are addressing this topic rather sporadically and focus on something completely different - observe the strange film Eye You. The focus of contemporary animators is really wide; it ranges from inventive genital depilation (No Man’s Bush) to castration in a carefully constructed twenty-minute-film Growing Pains.

Manieggs: Revenge of the Hard Egg

Zoltán Miklósy | Hungary | 2014 | 90 min

The story is about an inmate just released from jail, who spent two weeks in prison for a crime he did not commit and now seek revenge. The movie leads the viewer through lively adventures involving the Chineese Dragon clan, illegal cage fighting, bank robbery and thousands of their exciting moments. But there is a turn at the end the main characters have to face that will keep even the most avid action movie fans on their toes. Instinctly sarcastic, cynical, moving and of course highly entertaining, Manieggs is a movie for those who know what lies behind stereotypes.

The Jerboas

The Jerboas

Barbora Dlouhá | 60 min

Surely you do know the Jerboas! The new episodes of the animated series by the Czech television will once again take us to see the nice Jerboa family. With them, we will meet many other peculiar inhabitants of the African desert and savannah who are often even stranger than they look. And that is something! Siblings Tom and Tina are brave and curious and want to try everything themselves. They learn many new things this way and meet many remarkable creatures like the girdled lizard, the elephant shrew and the striped polecat, but sometimes they get into serious trouble. The Jerboas is mainly (but not only) for little children and is based upon real behaviour of exotic animals. It elaborates a well-known everyday fact – parents can be right in many things, but when it comes to good friends, we ourselves often know best. The series written by Martina Komárková and directed by Bára Dlouhá was created in the Czech Television animation studios. All characters in the series are voiced by Tomáš Juřička.

Animated Fish Soup at the Square

Animated Fish Soup at the Square

68 min

For quite a while now, animated films have not been intended exclusively for cinemas. Screenings at the Třeboň square will pay homage to the history of the town by presenting various short
films connected to the town by their themes – fish, fishermen, water and the underwater world. This showcase for children as well as adults was created in cooperation with the non-profit organisation AniPromítačka. This organisation aims to increase awareness of independent authorial animation by organising various thematic screenings in interesting “non-cinema” premises such as the Třeboň square. The showcase will include newer and older short films of both Czech and foreign production made by students and professionals alike. Worth our special mention is definitely one of the oldest
Czechoslovak animated films Wedding in the Coral Sea (1944). Another work worth mentioning is The Little Cousteau by Jakub Kouřil which won the author the Czech Lion Award in 2014.

Little Lord

Little Lord

Radek Beran | Czech Republic, Slovakia | 2015 | 83 min

This classical puppet film by the puppeteer and director Radek Beran is based on the Magnesia Litera award nominated children’s book The Great Journey of a Little Lord by Lenka Uhlířová and photographer Jiří Stach.

Little Lord who lived in the forest in a little hollow hill had a dream one night. He dreamt of a little house with a sign above its door reading: “Here you will find what you miss.” Willy-nilly, Little Lord had to set out for a journey in the morning.  He was driven by the feeling that he has indeed been missing something. His journey was not easy, he had to prove he had courage, overcome many obstacles and fulfil many tasks. But after all the adventures, an unexpected surprise was waiting for him.

The puppets and the graphic style of the film was designed by František A. Skála, a talented sculptor, illustrator and graphic whose work is characterised by laborious manufacturing process, emphasis on flawless handwork and sense of detail. The soundtrack was created by Milan Cais of the band Tata Bojs.
