About a Mother

Dina Velikovskaya | Russia | 2015 | 8 min

A humorous, touching and minimalistic animated film made by a student of the SHAR Studios in Moscow. It tells the story of a selfless African mother who gradually gives her sons everything she owns so as to help them on their journey through life. But this opens up new horizons for her as well. The author makes resourceful use of artistic shortcuts and inserts gentle gags in her black and white film.

Nothing You Need to See

Keigo Ito | Japan | 2015 | 4 min

Surreal, slightly experimental and excellently animated film Nothing You Need to See takes place in a subway train carriage. A young passenger has got problems with his face. It is rotating on his head as a mask and constantly showing its other side. The author suffices with gentle pencil strokes and three colours to create a very original work within three minutes of running time.

Stories about Guy and his Wife

Jiří Krupička, Matouš Valchář | Czech Republic | 2015 | 7 min

This mini-series of five slapstick sketches from the life of a man who terrorizes his wife with his indifference (whether by mistake or out of spite) will probably not please the feminists. But this puppet film by two young authors from the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Art and Design of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen will definitely entertain everyone else with its absurd and black humour.

Chloé Alliez | Belgium | 2015 | 6 min

A minimalistic yet inventive film in which the narration is comically (not) corresponding with the action on the screen. The film lists all the reasons to love women. What are they actually like? I Can’t Swim

Pavla Baštanová | Czech Republic | 2015 | 2 min

The short animated film I Can’t Swim is this year’s Academy of Arts Architecture & Design in Prague competition entry. The author explores the schizophrenic feelings of a man with a mental disorder. She uses a metaphor of a castaway on an abandoned island. The fantasy of a sick brain knows no boundaries - it consumes the schizophrenic and he is not able to distinguish his fantasies from the real world anymore. And yet the reality is so prosaic.

Steve Bache, Mahyar Goudarzi, Louise Peter | Germany | 2015 | 5 min

This interesting traditionally animated representative of the ani-doc genre builds upon the testimony of Frederick Baer, who is sentenced to death. He has been waiting for the sentence for ten years in Indiana State Prison. The authors managed to convincingly capture his destiny, memories, inner conflicts and feelings he experienced during this endless period of waiting. At the same time, they also meditate on questions of fatefulness and guilt.

Paradox

Paradox

Maria Cesaro, Rocco Venanzi | Italy | 2015 | 4 min

The candidly drawn graduate film Paradox presents an unusual look at the possible connection of the worlds of humans and plants. The authors try to visualize how it would look if the plants used humans as greedily and unscrupulously as humans use nature. This suggestive film portrays a battle of two different powers and leaves us uncertain as to who will win.

Made in China is a wry film depicting artificial characters vainly trying to emulate human life in an artificial world. Everything that surrounds them is made of plastic, as are the characters themselves. This “as if” environment is not capable of supporting life. The film portrays the world we create in our minds from hundreds of inputs we get from our surroundings. It is an analysis of the perception of a packed disorderly reality composed of images, sounds and signs that are constantly attacking us. The director, who also does experimental art and performances, managed to cram all this chaos into an original collage.
