Books on Books

Lei Lei | China | 2016 | 8 min

In his film, the young Chinese director uses historical covers of real books and creates a powerful, almost physical spectacle. He draws inspiration from his father’s book which maps the former variety of “western” covers and which influenced a whole new generation of Chinese designers.

Wirrwarr

Martina Bramkamp | United Kingdom | 2016 | 2 min

One minute, one second and one frame as a celebration of one hundred years of Dada. Animated sequences are linked through key words with emphasis on the historical and philosophical background of dada as an art movement. Sign language is used to communicate the letters, and the open hand gesture towards the end of the film signals triumph.

Progress

Otto Alder | Switzerland | 2016 | 5 min

Progress is an experimental animation in which thousands of photographs of an old building from the archives of Otto Alder are brought to life in an animated document of impermanence and recommencement. Can you identify some of the famous animators?

Geophone

Georgios Cherouvim | United States | 2016 | 6 min

What does a digital object sound like? Geometric objects are stored as a series of points, which are connected to form a continuous surface. Each point is associated with a set of 3D coordinates. Here, the coordinates of a given object are plotted along the point index to form three individual graphs which later turn into two channels, transforming the topological information into audible tracks.

Vacancy

Urte Zintler | Germany | 2016 | 5 min

A poetic debate with the issue of “home” and the experience of the outland as a new home. A collage of fragments of Hilde Domin’s poems and a concentration and overlay of sketchy drawings and sound elements – always incomplete, always close to disappearance. It describes the search for an inner place of calm – a timeless space of deceleration.

Seed

Jan Kokolia | Czechoslovakia | 2016 | 4 min

Everything comes from a seed. Sprout without any doubt. Friction. Putrefaction. Immensely cosmic and internally infinitesimal. In his graduate film, Jan Kokolia uses elaborate 3D animation to create a variation on the relation between micro and macro cosmos inside the human body. His main characters are microscopic particles clustering into concrete shapes.

Casino

Steven Woloshen | Canada | 2016 | 4 min

Steven Woloshen’s traditional animation without a camera is remarkable for its unusual variety of bright colours. Thanks to fluid metamorphoses of characteristic gaming symbols and elements, we delve into gambling intoxication. The director was motivated and inspired by a memory of his father who “loved to play games.”

Microscopia

Nikolaus Jantsch | Austria | 2016 | 5 min

The content of this work is about code, the code that surrounds us, that builds the chains of life, the code that is the source of all living and non-living structures. Is there a relation between the macro and the micro world? Has a bug a similar surface to the moon? This film is a cooperation of the Belgian composer Stephan Dunkelman and the Austrian filmmaker Nikolaus Jantsch.

Blue Movement

Haruka Mitani, Michael Lyons | Japan | 2016 | 4 min

An optisonic exploration of a world of primordial shapes created through various chemical treatments of a Super 8 emulsion. The sonic counterpart was made using a generative patch on an analogue synth, with voltage inputs from light sensors on the projection screen – the film itself steering the dynamics of sound synthesis.

Orogenesis

Boris Labbé | Spain | 2016 | 8 min

The authors take us to the black-and-white world of a realistic computer simulation. We see the contours of a mountain range, details of a valley and the images are accompanied by choir music. Together with distortions of the audio track, the familiar world starts to transform. A trip towards abstraction, as a hypothesis on how mountains might have been formed.

Yoyu Attacks!

Heidi Hörsturz | Netherlands | 2016 | 3 min

One of the thematic emphases of Heidi Hörsturz’s work is the desire of the contemporary society to get more overstimulation in rapidly shrinking attention spans. The repression of self-reflection with audiovisual brain attacks represents a striving for an artificially constructed world.
