Two thieves are reluctant to steal but their evil boss doesn’t want to hear it. So the two clumsy burglars, who would much rather go dancing somewhere, have to break into an abandoned house. Once inside, they stumble across a gramophone and release a bunch of ghosts from it. This musical slapstick was made by three students of the Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín as their graduate film.

In this ani-doc, the director decided to focus on a curious phenomenon from the world of ornithology. The film explains why cuckoos lay their eggs in the nests of other birds. The film’s visual style, illustrated and expanded by the commentary, was filmed with playful exaggeration and a hefty dose of humour.

This metaphoric story made using various natural materials is set at the seaside. Its director was inspired by the words of a friend dying of cancer: ‘Our life is like a wave of the sea hitting the shore and we are the drops thrown by the waves on the ground.’ The film was his graduate project at the Graphic College Jihlava.

This fairy tale will please mainly young audiences, as the director used drawings which are comprehensible and close to children. One morning, a magical rock appears in the backyard of a kindergarten. As soon as the children find it, a magical adventure starts, which can soften even a greedy professor.

This atmospheric and visually sharp and raw film is an adaptation of the old Norse poem from the Poetic Edda, Thrymskvida. In it, the famous hammer of Thor, the god of thunder, is stolen by a giant named Thrym. In addition to studying animation in Zlín, the director studied scientific illustration in Brno.

This playfully stylised, somewhat modern and somewhat traditional fairy tale is about a talented musician. He is banished from the kingdom’s capital and the guards destroy his precious instrument as the princess was enchanted by his music but disenchanted by his looks. But that can change.
