Jury Programme – Momoko Seto: Masterclass

Momoko Seto was born in Tokyo. She came to France to study fine arts at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts of Marseille and the Studio National des Arts Contemporains of Le Fresnoy. She works at the French CNRS (National Centre of Scientific Research) as a director in addition to working on personal experimental films combining different techniques to create an original and poetic world based on everyday life elements.

She is known for her ‘Planet’ series – short films exploring ‘invisible’ natural processes. Her film Planet ∑ won an award at Berlinale. In her masterclass, which will include a screening of her films, Seto will talk about her approach to work. She will also present her side projects and reveal how the first feature version of Planet is being made.

Planet A

Momoko Seto | France | 2008 | 8 min

The world has become a vast dried-out planet, where the growing of cotton, over-exploited for economic reasons is the main cause of desertification. A saline desert covers acres of dried-out land where strange salt trees appear. This phenomenon echoes an even greater ecological disaster, the desertification of the Aral Sea. And man is always responsible.
