Cutout

Yoshinao Satoh | Japan | 2021 | 9 min

This Japanese film, using the impressive technique of replacing, takes us into unsuspected worlds of urban space. In this reality, seemingly immovable ordinary objects usually not worth our attention perform a dynamic dance. Pavements, signs and railings form impressive patterns.

Between lines and shapes, hands touch; they explore and experience each other, wanting to break down the boundaries between their skins. The tactile sensations of the film are enhanced by animation and a layer of perforated paper forming a raster resembling skin.

Still Life

Conner Griffith | United States | 2021 | 8 min

Composed of over 1000 engravings from the 18th and 19th century, Still Life is a meditation on objectivity and meaning. The film explores the idea that we live in a world of objects and that a world of objects lives within us. Our evolved capacity to make sense of our environment has shaped our perceptual experience, demanding that we divide the world into distinct intelligible ‘bytes’.

Rites of Spring

Yiorgos Tsangaris | Cyprus | 2021 | 5 min

The film is inspired by Kostis Kolotas’ text An Unfinished Novel. In the novel, Christian Orthodox tradition and the mysterious world of travelling theatre troupes, considered sinful by organised religion, fascinate the young protagonist equally. The film explores hidden and not-so-hidden paths that connect Christian tradition, pagan ritual and theatre.

Sacred Clockworks

Moritz Schuchmann | Germany | 2021 | 5 min

Sacred Clockworks reflects religions through photographic animation of their impressive sacral architecture. Thereby the domes of churches, mosques and synagogues are treated like clockworks – infinitely continuous, embodying thousands of years of history. The film examines the dome’s distinctive structure, built from multiple layers of circular patterns.

The Land of Cruciform Sun

Aleš Zůbek | Czech Republic | 2021 | 12 min

The watersheds are saturated with a parasitic substance and have become a hatchery for a crystalline matter slowly overgrowing entire ecosystems for which time has run out. There is only the moment of endless refraction, which materialises and conserves the diverse expressions of their host in repetitive sequences.
