Suzie in the Garden

Lucie Sunková | Czech Republic | 2022 | 14 min

This atmospheric and poetic story for children is made using a very demanding but all the more remarkable technique of paint-on-glass animation. A little girl named Suzie spends time with her parents in an allotment garden. One day, she runs into a black dog; another day she finds a key. In the end, she discovers a garden which seems to be magical. The director has managed to superbly portray a notion of a magical world so typical for childhood and a child’s imagination.

Swop – Prima Ballerina

Job, Joris & Marieke | Netherlands | 2022 | 10 min

In their latest film, the acclaimed trio of Job, Joris & Marieke, specialising in originally stylised 3D animation, once again deals with gender stereotypes. Sef has a gift for ballet, but as a boy, he’s too shy to attend ballet courses. Then he finds out that he can switch heads with his friend, a girl. It turns out, however, that this solution is only temporary. What happens once it doesn’t work out?

King’s Garden

Iraj Mohammadi Razini | Iran | 2021 | 8 min

For his latest hand-animated film, the experienced Iranian director, who’s been animating for thirty years, chose atypical material. This tragic fairy tale, which tells the story of a young man trying to get a red rose for his beloved, is made using tree needles. On backlit glass, the director created settings and characters that are diverse both in detail and as a whole.

Pig

Jorn Leeuwerink | Netherlands | 2022 | 9 min

A sleeping pig becomes an excellent source of power for other animals, as its snout works as a socket and the animals sometimes plug in various appliances. Then someone comes up with an idea to create an electric main to supply an entire city. Its inhabitants have no clue where the power comes from, but their consumption keeps increasing. A tragicomic film with an openly ecological message.

Bird in the Peninsula

Atsushi Wada | France, Japan | 2022 | 16 min

The author of effortlessly drawn and more or less absurd films, Japanese phenomenon Atsushi Wada, has made another film in his unmistakeable style. On a meadow, children are rehearsing a dance with their teacher. A girl watching the dance starts disrupting the lesson inconspicuously, while one of the little dancers starts slowly drifting away from synchronised choreography and begins exploring other worlds.

In Nature

Marcel Barelli | Switzerland | 2021 | 5 min

This richly coloured and playfully animated film narrated by a child has a clear message: homosexuality isn’t limited to homo sapiens, but is common and completely natural for all animals; the director supports it with ample evidence. Marcel Barelli is the author of many animated films about animals and nature, with which he has won many international awards (with films, not animals).
