The best of this year's Anifilm
The festival will introduce the newest animated films, its competition of feature films includes 10 films. This year’s selection of 36 competing short films by Academy Award nominees, classics and renowned masters and young up-and-coming talents. Lovers of music videos and abstract and non-narrative animation can look forward to 22 music videos and 23 non-narrative films. In National Competition Czech Horizon, filmmakers will compete against each other but also have a chance to draw inspiration in several competition categories. This year will also host the fourth competition on VR films and our international competition of computer games will introduce 15 titles.
The non-competition programme’s main theme is Japan. Visitors can look forward to a comprehensive programme presenting various forms of Japanese animation. Legendary filmmaker Koji Yamamura will personally present his films and his drawings in an exhibition named Four Fleeting Figures organised by Anifilm in collaboration with Liberec Regional Gallery
Anifilm will honour animator Alfons Mensdorff-Pouilly and renowned members of our juries will present their work – among them will be for instance the director of Kung Fu Panda and lead animator of films by Wes Anderson and Guillermo del Toro. The festival has also prepared a surprise – amateur animated films made before 1990. Rare films by filmmakers working outside official structures will be screened from 16mm film copies and accompanied by live music. Children and their parents can look forward to many films and entertaining events of the Animoprogramme and our School of Animation. As always, almost every festival day will end with a midnight screening of scary and raunchy films. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Czech Radio, Anifilm will screen a showcase of animated films focusing on radio. During the festival, the Liberec square will be Taking Stock and see the best mainstream feature films from last year. Born to Liberec section will focus on Oldřich Kaiser. Anifilm can’t forget the 100th anniversary of renowned Czech artists – director Břetislav Pojar and graphic artist Miroslav Štěpánek. In the Game Zone, everyone can see and play competition games. But that’s not all, there will be exhibitions, concerts, puppet theatre and weekend Dubbing Studio by Czech Television. This year’s Anifilm will also host the first-ever pitching for the Czech Horizon Grant Supported by PPF Foundation aiming to support Czech professional short animated films.
