The King and the Mockingbird
14.00 // Naive Theatre
The captivating and somewhat disturbing – but all the more impressive – animated film The King and the Mockingbirdwas directed by the acclaimed French animator Paul Grimault, who also wrote the script together with Jacques Prévert. The authors first got the idea to make a film loosely inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s tale The Shepherdess and the Chimneysweep in 1946, but the version we know today wasn’t finished until 1979. And today, you have an opportunity to take your children to see this sophisticated fairy tale imbued with visual poetry and featuring both gentle humour and a philosophical message.
The Dark Crystal
19.00 // Varšava Cinema
Two mysterious and powerful races presented as two sides of the same coin, foundlings from an ancient nation wiped off the face of the planet by their enemies, a mysterious magical crystal, a wise oracle, and an adventurous journey of the main protagonist to fulfil an ancient prophecy. These are the typical ingredients of the fantasy genre introduced by the most famous sagas. The iconic film The Dark Crystal, made rather surprisingly by Jim Henson, the creator of the popular Muppets, is a worthy contribution to this tradition.
The Boy and the Heron
20.30 // Dr. E. Beneš Square (Open–Air Cinema)
In his latest film, master of animation Hayao Miyazaki once again ventures beyond the realms of imagination and dreams. Young Mahito moves with his father to a rural estate far from hectic Tokyo. On his journey of exploration, Mahito encounters a brave girl named Himi, an army of parakeets, and cute creatures called Warawara.
