Jiří Kubíček: Selected Works
10.30 // Pavilion I
This year’s winner of the Anifilm Lifetime Achievement Award is Jiří Kubíček – a dramaturge, screenwriter, teacher, occasional director, and a key figure of Czech animation. Today at 10.30 in the Pavilion I, you can watch a selection of his animated works, which comprise a diversity of short films. Jiří Kubíček has collaborated with many directors, including Václav Bedřich, Jaroslav Boček, Břetislav Pojar, and Pavel Koutský. The screening block is intended primarily for adult audiences.
Czech Collage Animation
14.30 // Pavilion I
Collage is a special method of animation based on the artistic technique of the same name. It uses clippings from old books as well as modern magazines. Creators of collage films can also utilise photographs, prints, archival footage, drawings, and puppets. They combine elements that would rarely meet in reality and such “encounters” imbue their films with new qualities. As this block proves, combining seemingly uncombinable elements can produce surreal visions and rather specific commentaries on our society.
Paintings Come to Life
16.00 // Varšava Cinema
Viewers of this block of short films will find themselves transported inside famous as well as lesser-known paintings or otherwise surrounded by the visual styles of their authors, which will allow them to experience fine art in motion. This screening block also includes the unique film Destino, originally conceived by Salvador Dalí and Walt Disney in 1946. However, they managed to make only 20 seconds of animation, and the film was eventually finished in 2003 based on their original storyboards.
