Welcome the North Bohemian city of Liberec. Its most prominent landmark is the 1,012-metre high Ještěd Mountain, crowned with the remarkable silhouette of the television tower and hotel built between 1966 and 1973. In 1969, its architect Karel Hubáček became the only Czech in history to receive the prestigious August Perret Prize. Thanks to its original design, the building itself has received a number of accolades – it was declared a National Cultural Monument, holds the title of the most important Czech building of the 20th century and it aspires to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The city’s second symbol is the Neo-Renaissance City Hall, built by the construction company Sachers & Gärtner between 1888 and 1893 according to a project by Viennese architect Franz von Neumann. The city hall is also a National Cultural Monument and boasts a richly decorated façade, rare stained-glass windows and a beautiful ceremonial hall, an example of exquisite craftsmanship.
Another popular tourist destination is the Liberec Zoo. Founded in 1904, it’s the oldest zoo of its kind in the Czech Republic and specialises in keeping rare and often critically endangered species. Some of the most interesting species in the zoo include the golden takin, snow leopard, black tree monitor and the largest variety of birds of prey in Europe. The city also has its own Botanical Garden, which opened in 1895. Its greenhouses are a true paradise for plants from all over the world.
One sought-after attraction is an unusual project for the whole family – Centrum Babylon. Under one roof, you can find an aquapark with Jules Verne-style decorations, aquariums, caves and daily thematic laser shows. Lunapark offers attractions reminiscent of old Czech fairs, iQPARK introduces the wonders of the world to children and Funpark tests their agility, playfulness and flexibility.
Liberec can also offer an indoor DinoPark with moving and roaring models of prehistoric animals, a 4D cinema, real rain and an adventure trail for courageous kids. The city is also home to iQLANDIA, a unique science centre explaining various scientific phenomena through games and experiments. You can try more than 400 interactive tools and exhibits and visit the 3D planetarium.
If you wish to get to know the history of our city and the beauty of the nature surrounding it, visit the North Bohemian Museum with its Crystal Tower, accessible by the longest glass ladder in the world. In the Technical Museum, you can appreciate the beauty of historic cars, motorcycles, bikes and public transport vehicles. In the Liberec Regional Gallery situated in a former spa building, you will bathe in collections of Czech art and French, German, Austrian and Dutch paintings.
